Discussions at CRIC 11 opened on Thursday morning with a plenary discussion on enhancing information sharing on best practices in implementing the Convention. Two panel discussions took place in the morning on the theme “Is information on best practices really accessible?” The first panel, moderated by Sally Bunning, FAO, addressed “Identification of recommended databases of best practices,” and featured the five organizations chosen as fitting the criteria in a call of expressions of interest in supporting CRIC in the compilation and dissemination of best practices on SLM technologies, including adaptation, and on funding and resource mobilization: the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS); IPOGEA Traditional Knowledge Research Centre; ENDA Tiers Monde; UNEP; and the World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT). The presentations by the five organizations about the comparative advantages of their approach to collecting and disseminating best practices was followed by statements and questions from Parties.
The second morning panel, on “Policy framework for data access,” moderated by Amy Heyman and Fabio Grita of FAO, featured presentations by the CBD and UNFCCC on their data access policies and practices. In the discussion that followed delegates asked about how the CBD and UNFCCC handle confidentiality, intellectual property protection for traditional knowledge, data quality and accuracy, and the possibility and advantages and disadvantages of creating a common database for CBD, CCD and UNFCCC.
In the afternoon CRIC turned to the preliminary analysis of information contained in reports relating to operational objective 3 of the Strategy. A session on “Constraints and opportunities for the implementation of DLDD national monitoring systems,” moderated by Asghar Fazel, UNEP, featured a presentation by Adamou Bouhari, UNEP on the “Supporting common environmental information systems for the three Rio conventions: The FNR project experience.” This was followed by an interactive discussion on the issue between Bouhari and delegates.
During the final half of the afternoon session the CRIC opened general discussion on improving the procedures for the communication of information as well as the quality and format of reports to be submitted to the COP.
Closing the session, Chair Rowen announced that the second and third informal sessions to discuss the outcome document would take place during the lunch break and in the evening.
