The AIMS (Atlantic, Indian, Mediterranean and South China Sea) Regional Preparatory Meeting for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) convened on Wednesday, 17 July, in Baie Lazare, Seychelles. After opening remarks from Rolph Payet, Minister for Environment and Energy, Seychelles, Amb. Marlene Moses, Chair, Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), Wu Hongbo, UN Under-Secretary General for Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and Secretary-General of the 2014 Third International Conference on SIDS, James Alix Michel, President of the Seychelles, welcomed delegates to this “critical” meeting, calling on them to create a framework that goes beyond rhetoric and provides a platform for concrete action.

Delegates then heard presentations on the national consultations and reports from Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, the Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles and Singapore. Nikhil Seth, UNDESA, presented a synthesis report of four national reports. The SIDS Youth Network for the AIMS Region presented on the outcomes from their meeting held the previous week. Delegates then embarked on discussions of progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action and the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation, as well as convened in an interactive dialogue with the UN system and regional organizations on ensuring integrated approaches to SIDS’ sustainable development.
