1st Session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste and Pollution (ISP-CWP P1)
There was no celebratory tone to welcome the newest intergovernmental science-policy panel and the meeting ended without fully completing any of its expected deliverables, including rules of procedure, location of the Secretariat, and dates of future meetings.
70th Meeting of the GEF Council
At their December 2025 meetings, the Councils of the family of funds managed by the GEF approved approximately USD 372 million in funding to support climate action, biodiversity conservation, pollution prevention and reduction, and integrated environmental action across Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean.
GEF Consultation with CSOs
Participants reviewed progress toward the ninth replenishment cycle and considered ways to ensure implementation of the whole-of-society approach throughout the cycle. They called for increased funding for the Small Grants Program and the Inclusive Conservation Initiative, as well as enhanced engagement with civil society and other non-state actors.
21st Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF)
Participants called for urgent global action on systemic threats driving environmental challenges and said peace, justice and equity are prerequisites for sustainable development.
24th Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention (COP 24)
A sustainable, climate-resilient, and inclusive Mediterranean blue economy was the common vision identified in Cairo. Celebrating 50 years of MAP and the Convention, the meeting adopted a new Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development and the Cairo Ministerial Declaration, which emphasizes the value of shared commitment and collaboration.
OECPR-7 and UNEA-7
Delegates at UNEA-7 confronted new and emerging issues, linking the environment to technology, health, and the global economy, while also considering how best to deal with ever-growing concerns pertaining to climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
23rd Session of the UNCCD Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC-23)
Amid the exchanges on capacity-building, reporting, resource mobilization, land degradation neutrality, and sand and dust storms, the Gender Caucus meeting, which focused on Indigenous women’s leadership, brought a sense of urgency, as well as colorful energy to the discussions.
11th Session of the ITPGRFA Governing Body
After 12 years of negotiations, delegates could not agree on measures to enhance the Multilateral System of access and benefit-sharing. Decisions on farmers’ rights and conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture set the path for intersessional work.
20th Meeting of the CITES Conference of the Parties (CITES CoP20)
Delegates worked through 114 agenda items, adopted 353 decisions, and reviewed 50 listing proposals, protecting 77 new species. The Kazakh population of saiga antelope, the South African bontebok, the Guadalupe fur seal, and Parlatore’s podocarp show encouraging population resurgence or improved conservation status.
