Highlights for Monday, 6 October 2014
CBD COP 12 & NP COP/MOP 1 COP 12 opening plenary heard opening and regional statements; addressed organizational issues; and discussed the fourth edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO-4). In the afternoon, Working Group I (WG I) addressed the GBO-4 and the mid-term review of the implementation of the Strategic Plan. WG II addressed Article 8(j) (traditional knowledge).

Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) hosted this side event on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), in collaboration with the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and the Conservation Strategy Fund (CSF). The project aims to develop instruments and training courses, provide technical advice, facilitate planning and decision-making processes and promote knowledge-sharing. An inventory of methods, tools and indicators on how best to assess, valuate and integrate ecosystem services into policies and practices was presented, as well as experiences in assessing and integrating ecosystem services into national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) in selected countries, including Mexico and Namibia.

The UK’s Darwin Initiative: Experiences from the NBSAPs 2.0 Mainstreaming Biodiversity and Development Project

The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) convened a side event to show how the UK’s Darwin Initiative supports implementation of the CBD. The side event focused on the wide range of projects that the Initiative supports, showcasing the NBSAPs 2.0 Mainstreaming Biodiversity and Development Project, funded by the Darwin Initiative. The NBSAP 2.0 is a three-year project supporting four African countries – Botswana, Namibia, the Seychelles and Uganda – to build resilient NBSAPs. During the event, Jeremy Eppel (Defra) announced additional funding of £150,000 as a follow-up to this project.

This side event reported on the Second Dialogue Seminar on Scaling up Financing for Biodiversity, organized by the Governments of Ecuador, Norway, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Sweden, Uganda, the European Commission and the CBD Secretariat, which took place from 9-12 April 2014, in Quito, Ecuador. The dialogue seminar focused on: building trust and mutual understanding of the diversity of views and perspectives on values of biodiversity; reviewing ways and means to mainstream various biodiversity values into national decision making and other multilateral processes; and seeking enhanced understanding of various operationalizing mechanisms for mobilizing financial and non-financial resources, including safeguards for their implementation.
