Bali, IndonesiaOn Thursday morning, the Panel reconvened in the plenary meeting and finalized several agenda items, including its programme and budget, and the timetable for the Fifth Assessment Report. In the closing of the session, Rajendra Pachauri, IPCC Chair, and Renate Christ, IPCC Secretary, thanked the government of Indonesia, the local organizing committee, Technical Support Units, Bureau and Secretariat. Chair Pachauri officially closed the session at 12.10 pm.

Indonesia noted the success of the session and said they were very fortunate to host this ‘momentous’ meeting in the preparation of the Fifth Assessment Report. 

The session ended with Francis Hayes, World Meteorological Organization's Conference Officer, singing to the Panel his version of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”.

The Republic of Korea welcomed participants to the 32nd Session of the IPCC to be held in Busan, Republic of Korea, from 11-14 October 2010.

Highlights for Wednesday, 28 October 2009

On Wednesday morning, Working Groups I and III met to finalize the respective chapter outlines for the Fifth Assessment Report. Several contact groups also met throughout the day, addressing Article 2 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), a revised proposal by the European Community for special observer status and other issues. In the afternoon, the IPCC convened in a plenary meeting to discuss several agenda items, with the admission of observer organizations and matters related to the UNFCCC among others. The Panel re-convened in the evening to discuss the scoping of the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report, and discussions continued late into the night.

The Panel convened in plenary in the afternoon to address several agenda items, including admission of observer organizations, implementation of decisions taken at IPCC-30 and other issues.

In the afternoon plenary meeting, the IPCC also addressed the Rules of Procedure for the election of the IPCC Bureau and any Task Force Bureau.

In the morning, Working Group I met to finalize the chapter outlines for the Fifth Assessment Report.

Highlights for Tuesday, 27 October 2009

On Tuesday, all three IPCC Working Groups held sessions to discuss the outlines of the Groups’ contributions to the Fifth Assessment Report. Working Groups II and III continued discussions late into the night, focusing on regional assessments and sector-specific chapters, respectively. Several contact groups also convened throughout the day, addressing issues related to Article 2 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, framing issues of the Working Group I report and a revised proposal by the European Community for special observer status with the IPCC. Working Group sessions will continue on Wednesday morning.

Highlights for Monday, 26 October 2009
The 31st session of the IPCC opened today in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia, with opening statements from the IPCC Chair Rajendra Pachauri, Indonesian hosts and representatives of the Panel's parent organizations, the World Meteorological Organization and United Nations Environment Programme. In the morning, after approving the report of IPCC-30, delegates addressed the scoping of the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5), focusing on the treatment of cross-cutting themes. In the afternoon, governments convened in two parallel sessions of Working Groups II and III to discuss the respective outlines of the AR5. The Working Groups will continue their work on Tuesday. 

The 31st Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) opened this morning in Bali, Indonesia.

Sri Woro Harijono, Deputy Secretary-General of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, Indonesia, highlighted the importance of strengthening research on the interaction between climate change and such phenomena as, for example, monsoons and tropical cyclones.

Joseph Alcamo, UNEP, said that the IPCC needs to be more engaged with the policy arena.

Rachmat Witoelar, Chair of the National Council of Climate Change, Indonesia, welcomed delegates to Bali and noted the importance of scientific assessment for mitigation and adaptation in developing countries. 

IPCC Chair Rajendra Pachauri emphasized that the IPCC scientific assessment is increasingly seen against the backdrop of economic and social consequences of climate change.

Yan Hong, WMO, stressed the importance of disaster management and recounted the success of World Climate Conference-3.
