Highlights for Saturday, 6 June 2009

In the morning and afternoon, the AWG-LCA met in an informal plenary. Throughout the day, various contact groups and informal consultations took place under the AWG-KP, SBI and SBSTA.

Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA): Mitigation

Tijen İğcí (Turkey) called for a “wide range of commitments” taking into account national circumstances and capabilities.

Selwin Hart (Barbados), for AOSIS, highlighted that the level of mitigation ambition under the BAP and AWG-KP will have “serious consequences” for the most vulnerable countries.
Hanne Bjurstrøm (Norway) underscored the importance of national greenhouse gas inventories.
Contact group on Annex I parties' emission reductions

José Domingos Gonzalez Miguez (Brazil) stressed that the introduction of a new protocol could take up to 15 years, and delay mitigation efforts.

Jun Arima (Japan) highlighted the underlying science that shows that current emissions are almost double the atmosphere’s absorptive capacity.

The Bonn Climate Day of Action
Global youth and residents of Bonn marching on the grounds of the conference venue. The rally was staged to remind participants at the Climate Change Talks that their decisions would affect the world.
