The eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) opened today in Quito, Ecuador, with a High-Level Ministerial Panel on “Uniting the Rights of Nature and the Green Economy: Finding Solutions to Protecting International Wildlife.” The Panel focused on reconciling the “apparently conflicting philosophies” of the green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication and the rights of nature. Philippe Cousteau, Jr. moderated the panel.

Elsa Nickel, Director of Nature Conservation, Ministry of Environment, Germany, accepted the Champion Extraordinaire award for her government’s support towards the operations of the: CMS, Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), Agreement on the Conservation of Populations of European Bats (EUROBAT) and Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic and North Seas (ASCOBANS) secretariats. She also received the Champion Plus award for her country’s efforts in supporting the conservation of the African elephant for 2015-2017.

Patrick Van Klaveren, Ambassador to the Principality of Monaco in Spain, received the Champions Extraordinaire award for his country’s support towards the operations of the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Contiguous Atlantic Area (ACCOBAMS) Secretariat. He also received the Champion award for his country’s support of marine species in 2015-2017.

Geoff Richardson, Assistant Secretary, Australia, received the Champion award for his government’s support for the conservation of the Pacific loggerhead turtles for 2015-2017.
