Highlights for Friday, 23 October 2009

The XIII World Forestry Congress, co-organized by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Government of Argentina, took place from 18 to 23 October 2009 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Themed “Forests in Development: A Vital Balance,” 7,100 participants from international organizations, governments, academia, private sector and civil society, representing 160 nations, came together to discuss forest issues at this event. Participants convened in daily plenaries; two roundtables on forests and energy, and forests and climate change; over 60 thematic parallel technical sessions; seven poster sessions and numerous other side events. The daily thematic sessions focused on the themes of:

• Forests and biodiversity;
• Producing for development;
• Forests in the service of people;
• Caring for our forests;
• Development opportunities;
• Organizing forest development; and
• People and forests in harmony.

Major outcomes were a declaration from participants outlining nine findings and 27 strategic actions through which the “vital balance between forests and development can be improved;” and a set of recommendations to the UNFCCC calling for urgent action on major issues, including inter alia the: promotion of sustainable forest management; need to pursue climate change mitigation and adaptation concurrently; need for improved monitoring and assessment techniques: and need for improved inter-sectoral cooperation.

Highlights for Thursday, 22 October 2009
Thursday at XIII WFC was marked by bustling participants darting to the 23 parallel sessions, two plenaries, and an all day forum on investment and finance. In addition, Jorge Rodríguez, Minister of the Environment, Energy and Telecommunications of Costa Rica, was recognized by the FAO for the efforts to combat deforestation and increase forest cover through a PES program.

Highlights for Wednesday, 21 October 2009
Participants met in a morning plenary session on human development in harmony with forests, followed by eight parallel sessions and a poster session. One of the many side events of the day was a four-hour presentation of the FAO's initiative on Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS). The afternoon was dominated by a forum on forests and climate change which focused primarily on land-use change and REDD.

Highlights for Tuesday, 20 October 2009
In the morning participants met in plenary, followed by eight parallel sessions and a poster session. In the afternoon a four hour forum was held on forests and energy which consisted of three panels and a show of hands at the end of the forum on the question: will the development of bioenergy be good or bad for the forest sector? The result was inconclusive, with participants being divided evenly in their opinions. Numerous side events also took place throughout the day as well.

Highlights for Sunday, 18 October 2009
The 13th World Forestry Congress, co-organized by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Government of Argentina, opened in the evening of Sunday, 18 October 2009 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Themed “Forests in Development: A Vital Balance,” over 4500 participants from international organizations, governments, academia, private sector and civil society, representing 160 nations, came together to discuss forest issues.
During this weeklong event, participants will convene in daily plenaries; two roundtables on forests and energy, and forests and climate change; over 60 thematic parallel technical sessions; and numerous other events and side events.

The Tango Orchestra of the City of Buenos Aires welcomed participants to the World Forestry Congress with a classic selection of tangos and candombes.

Highlights for Saturday, 17 October 2009
The side event on Regional Forest Cooperation took place on 17 October 2009 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on the occassion of the XIII World Forestry Congress, organized by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the German Organisation for Technical Cooperaton GmbH (GTZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Thirty experts from regional organizations and initiatives, as well as 25 experts from research organizations, national and international institutions and representatives of multilateral and bilateral donors attended the event.
