On Friday, GEO Week participants visited the Songor Ramsar site and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Protected Area, a protected wetland located on Ghana's eastern coastline. Co-organized by Ernest Acheampong, GEO Secretariat, together with The Wildlife Division of The Forestry Commission of Ghana, GEO Week participants learned about community mangrove restoration and sustainable utilization of wetland resources for economic development in local communities as well as for biodiversity conservation, including threatened sea turtles, manatees and migratory birds. Participants visited a nursery where mangrove plants are being cultivated. They then walked through a mangrove restoration project initiated in 2001 and visited the salt flats of the Songor Lagoon for more recent mangrove reforestation. Participants ended the field trip with a short boat ride around the Songor Estuary.
