The second session of the plenary meeting on an Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) opened today in Panama City, Panama. In the morning, delegates heard opening remarks from Ibrahim Thiaw, Director, Division of Environmental Policy Implementation, UNEP, who highlighted IPBES' relevance to informed policy-making. Mayra Arosemena, Vice-Minister, Foreign Affairs, Panama, urged for agreeing on key elements to enable the establishment of IPBES in Panama. In the afternoon, delegates engaged in discussions on the draft work programme of the platform, as well as the functions and structures of bodies that might be established under IPBES.
