On Wednesday morning, delegates exchanges ideas on the scientific, technical, economic, legal, environmental, socio-economic and other aspects of the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ), focusing on marine protected areas (MPAs), environmental impact assessment (EIA) processes and marine genetic resources (MGRs). Delegates welcomed discussions moving beyond ideological debates and clear willingness from all parties to engage in substantive discussions.
In the afternoon, they discussed possible options and approaches for the conservation and sustainable use of BBNJ, including: an intergovernmental committee to negotiate a new UNCLOS implementation agreement as a package; a more focused agenda for the Working Group; and in-depth intersessional work prior to the next meeting of the Working Group, including in the form of informal workshops. The Friends of the Co-Chairs group reconvened in the evening. |
