Highlights for Monday, 5 May 2014
.
OWG Co-Chair Macharia Kamau welcomed delegates to OWG-11 and reviewed the programme of work for OWG-9 through OWG-13.
OWG-11Co-Chair Macharia Kamau opened the eleventh meeting of the Open Working Group (OWG-11) and highlighted that the Co-Chairs have attempted to attend as many as possible of the events, workshops and retreats that various actors have organized in an effort to build consensus in the last two months. He called attention to the compilation documents prepared by the Co-Chairs, which he said offer a record of what has been presented, and will provide a resource for the post-2015 process. He said the OWG is now moving forward and working towards the development of a zero draft. He stressed that the outlines of the goals are taking shape, and the biggest gaps are in refining the targets. He emphasized that the OWG needs to refine the targets, limit them to a manageable number, and address the universality of the goals and targets. Co-Chair Kamau also said a chapeau would be drafted this week and indicated it would focus on the main principles that give direction and historical context to the SDGs and targets.

Co-Chair Csaba Kőrösi informed the OWG that there would be representatives from UN agencies and other experts at side events during the week, to provide advice for members on the formulation of targets and indicators. Kamau urged OWG members to listen to the input of Major Groups and other stakeholders during informal discussions held each morning, noting that they provide a window to the world outside this room. He also suggested viewing the Working Document in its aggregate, not by each separate Focus Area, to determine whether the entire effort will support a “sustainable pathway” to 2030.

Speakers proceeded to offer opening comments on the Working Document as well as specific suggestions for the focus areas on: poverty eradication, building shared prosperity and promoting equality; and sustainable agriculture, food security and nutrition, during morning, afternoon and evening sessions.
Participants gather in Conference Room 1 for the first day of OWG-11.
Major Groups prepare for the afternoon session on the first day of OWG-11.

A full Conference Room 1 hosted discussions on the focus areas on poverty eradication and sustainable agriculture, food security and nutrition on the first day of OWG-11.
