Highlights for Thursday, 8 May 2014

|
 On Thursday, 8 May 2014, delegates to the OWG discussed proposed focus areas on: Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP); Climate Change; Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Resources, Oceans and Seas; and Ecosystems and Biodiversity. While some speakers supported including each of the focus areas as stand-alone goals, others suggested integrating the targets into other focus areas or merging focus areas.
On SCP, several speakers suggested adding references to the 10-year Framework of Programmes (10YFP) on SCP and adding a target on chemicals and wastes, among other topics. On climate change, several speakers suggested adding related targets to each of the focus areas and not retaining a stand-alone goal, especially in light of the ongoing negotiations under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. A number of speakers supported merging the focus areas on oceans and ecosystems, while others said the time is ripe to elevate the issue of oceans through a stand-alone goal. Proposals on the targets for these focus areas included suggestions with regard to desertification, land degradation and drought and small scale fisheries, among others.
On Friday, delegates will address the final two focus areas in the working document: Means of Implementation/Global Partnership for Sustainable Development; and Peaceful and Inclusive Societies, Rule of Law and Capable Institutions.
