High-level Roundtable on Climate Action

24 September 2020 | Virtual

In a moderated roundtable event that will include remarks by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, global climate leaders will highlight the "boldest actions" on the Secretary-General’s “6 climate-positive actions”, which were launched on Earth Day. These six actions call on countries to:

  • deliver new jobs and businesses through a clean, green transition and accelerate the decarbonization of all aspects of their economy;
  • create green jobs and sustainable and inclusive growth when rescuing business and not bail out outdated polluting, carbon-intensive industries;
  • shift economies from gray to green, making societies and people more resilient through a transition that is fair to all and leaves no one behind;
  • invest public funds in the future, by flowing to sustainable sectors and projects that help the environment and climate instead of subsidizing fossil fuel industries;
  • take risks and opportunities related to climate into account through the global financial system, when it shapes policy and infrastructure, and no longer ignore the price our planet pays for unsustainable growth; and
  • resolve both emergencies of nature and humanity in crisis by working together as an international community.

The aim of the roundtable event is to link recovering better with the 2015 Paris Agreement, thus leading up to the Fifth Anniversary of the Paris Agreement on 12 December, when governments are expected to present ambitious and quality climate plans (the Nationally Determined Contributions – NDCs – and Long-Term Strategies).

IISD, through its Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB) Meeting Coverage, will produce digital coverage from the High-level Roundtable on Climate Action. Kindly return to this page on Thursday, 24 September 2020, for more information.
