UN Climate Change Conference June 2011

6-17 June 2011 | Bonn, Germany

Summary of the Meeting

A view of the room during the AWG-LCA closing plenary

Highlights from Friday, 17 June

In the afternoon, the AWG-KP plenary convened. AWG-KP Chair Adrian Macey (New Zealand) introduced his revised proposal to facilitate negotiations (FCCC/KP/AWG/2011/CRP.1), identifying: "modest progress" on streamlining the text on Protocol amendments and numbers; "considerable progess" in the text on land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF); and "little change" in the text on the flexibility mechanisms. He also identified progress on methodological issues, while saying the text on potential consequences has not changed. Noting discussions on unresolved political issues, AWG-KP Chair Macey said the Bonn meeting has provided parties with a better understanding of the issues and provided a solid ground for the discussions to contninue. Parties agreed to suspend AWG-KP 16 and resume it at an additional session in September-October. The resumed 16th session of the AWG-KP was suspended at 5:22 pm.

The AWG-LCA closing plenary convened at around 7 pm on Friday evening. UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres reported that adequate financial pledges had been put forward to organize an intersessional meeting during the last week of September and first week of October at a venue to be confirmed next week. Parties agreed that the AWG-LCA suspend its 14th session and continue working in the autumn based on the agenda agreed in Bangkok and the groups launched in Bonn. They also agreed that work done by facilitators of the various informal negotiating groups will be taken forward by making the facilitators' notes available online. Party submissions made at the Bonn session will be included in a miscellaneous document unless parties indicate to the Secretariat that they wish to represent particular submissions as conference room papers. The resumed second session of AWG-LCA 14 was suspended at 9:01 pm.
