Sixth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions (Article 8(j) WG 6) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)

The plenary convened at 11 am, to discuss and adopt recommendations on mechanisms for participation, sui generis systems, ethical code and work programme. The plenary also discussed and adopted views on the international ABS regime, for transmission to the ABS Working Group. The meeting was gavelled to a close at 5:05 pm.

Gurdial Singh, Malaysia, explained that the Like-Minded Asia-Pacific Region had been formed at this meeting to provide a forum for developing countries in the region with common interests.

CBD Executive Secretary Djoghlaf paid tribute to the late French anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss and congratulated participants on fruitful collaboration between country delegates and community representatives.

WG Co-Chair Breier congratulated delegates on the development of the work programme and the views on ABS, and invited parties to overcome their differences on bracketed text remaining in the ethical code in time for COP 10. WG Co-Chair Mulenkei encouraged delegates to reach Nagoya with the message of preserving Mother Earth for future generations.
