Third UNFCCC Dialogue Begins in Bonn
On Wednesday, the UNFCCC Dialogue began, with participants meeting in the morning and afternoon to discuss how to realize the full potential of technology. An AWG contact group convened, and contact groups and informal consultations under the SBSTA and SBI continued on a variety of issues, including the budget, deforestation, and Decision 1/CP.10 (Buenos Aires programme of work on adaptation and response measures).

Dialogue on long-term action
|

|

UNFCCC Executive Secretary Yvo de Boer presented an overview of progress and activities under the Dialogue.
|

Halldor Thorgeirsson, UNFCCC Secretariat, introduced the issues to be covered in the Dialogue and noted a survey by Conference Services.
|

David Hone, Shell and World Business Council for Sustainable Development, outlined a business perspective on future action.
|

Chris Leon, Cement Australia, presented on a sectoral approach to reducing cement industry greenhouse gases.
|

Dolf Gielen, International Energy Agency, noted the importance of energy efficiency in buildings, appliances, industry and the transport sector.
|

Ann Condon, General Electric, drew attention to the US Climate Action Partnership, which is calling for strong US national legislation on emissions.
|

Kok Kee Chow, Expert Group on Technology Transfer (EGTT), reflected on the EGTT's activities in the past five years.
|

Fiona Nicholls, Rio Tinto, outlined various CCS technologies, stressing the need for significant investment and public-private sector cooperation.
|

Harlan Watson, US, highlighted the need for energy efficiency, tax incentives and the use of existing clean technologies.

Contact Groups
|

In the AWG contact group held during the lunch period, participants discussed the list of possible elements for draft conclusions.
|

Artur Runge-Metzger, EU, emphasized the importance of a "shared vision."
|

Alf Wills, South Africa for the G-77/China, stressed the urgency of the AWG's work and called for focusing on "what needs to be done."

Philip Gwage, Uganda, and Shayleen Thompson, Australia, co-chaired the contact group on progress on the implementation of decision 1/CP.10, where agreement was reached on SBI draft conclusions.

Around the Subsidiary Bodies
|

Contact group Co-Chairs Hernán Carlino, Argentina, and Audun Rosland, Norway, led informal discussions on reducing emissions from deforestation in developing countries.
|

Adaptation Fund contact group Co-Chair Jukka Uosukainen, Finland, greeted Executive Secretary Yvo de Boer before the workshop.
|

William Hohenstein, US, and Darren Goetze, Canada, chatted during the deforestation informals.
|

José Romero, Switzerland, discussed a document with Khalid Mohammed Abuleif, Saudi Arabia.
|

Vienna's table provided tourism information for delegates planning to attend the fourth workshop of the UNFCCC Dialogue and fourth AWG in late August.
|

Greenpeace offered participants a compilation of songs, including "You Haven't Done Nothing" and "We're on the Road to Nowhere," to remind them of missed opportunities and failure to grasp the urgency of climate change.
