Highlights for Monday 1 February 2010
 
Sixth Trondheim Conference on BiodiversityThe Sixth Trondheim Conference on Biodiversity convened for its first day in Trondheim, Norway on Monday, 1 February 2010. In the morning, delegates were serenaded by the Cantus Choir before a number of speakers addressed challenges to and perspectives on the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). In the afternoon, sessions focused on important and emerging issues for establishing post-2010 targets. The evening concluded with a reception hosted by the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment.

Opening sessions

Rita Ottervik, Mayor of Trondheim, welcomed participants to Norway.

Erik Solheim, Minister of the Environment and International Development, Norway, described how this conference was a stepping stone toward the CBD COP 10 in Nagoya.

Angela Copper, Deputy Executive Director, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), talked about the need for a new global vision for biodiversity.

Jostein Gaarder, Norwegian author and founder of the Sophie Prize, addressed the conference in a special session.

Jostein Gaarder discussed "the good obligation" to make biodiversity relevant for people.



Reception

Delegates mingled and dined at the reception.

Jon Hutton (UNEP-WCMC) and Willem Wijnstekers (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, CITES) shared a laugh over dinner.
