Highlights for Tuesday 2 February 2010
 

Sixth Trondheim Conference on BiodiversityThe Sixth Trondheim Conference on Biodiversity continued on Tuesday, 2 February 2010 in Trondheim, Norway. The morning session featured talks on biodiversity tipping points in rainforests, drylands, oceans, coral reefs, and wetlands. The afternoon session featured talks on the economics of biodiversity and ecosystem services. In the evening, delegates attended a dinner reception organized on the outskirts of the city featuring a live band and bonfire.

Session 4: Meeting tipping points and challenges for major ecosystems

Paul Leadley, Université Paris-Sud XI, France, spoke about The Global Biodiversity Outlook 3 study.

Carlos Nobre, Brazilian Institute for Space Research (INPE), discussed the disappearing Amazon forest.

Henrique Pereira, Center for Environmental Biology, Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, talked about marine biodiversity.

Mark Winslow, International Crops Research Institute (ICRISAT), Hyderabad, India, described threats to and opportunities for agro-biodiversity in dryland regions.

Jan Helge Fosså, Institute for Marine Research, Norway, discussed ocean acidification and biodiversity.

Paul Leadley, Université Paris-Sud XI, France, talked about coral reefs disappearing as a result of large-scale changes.

Ritesh Kumar, Wetlands International for South Asia, India, discussed the significance of wetland ecosystem services and of degraded wetlands for human health and well-being.

 

 


Special session

Nick Davidson, Deputy Secretary General, Ramsar Secretariat, described how wetlands can be an answer to climate change.


Session 5: Reflecting the economics of biodiversity and ecosystem services

Carsten Neßhöver, Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), Germany, talked about the economics of ecosystem services and biodiversity.

Patrick ten Brink, Head of Brussels office, Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP), talked about integrating economic values into policy assessment for biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Russell Mittermeier, President, Conservation International, United States, discussed the wealth of nature in terms of ecosystem services, biodiversity, and human well-being.

Katia Karousakis, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) talked about Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation Plus Conservation in Developing Countries (REDD+).


Susan Brownlie, de Villiers Brownlie Associates, South Africa, explored the relationship between biodiversity and business and suggested ways to engage the business sector.

 

 

 

Evening reception hosted by the Sør-Trøndelag County Authority (STFK)

Evening festivities featured a live band.

An open fire kept delegates warm despite the chilly Norwegian night.
