Highlights for Wednesday 3 February 2010
 

Sixth Trondheim Conference on BiodiversityThe Sixth Trondheim Conference on Biodiversity continued on Wednesday, 3 February 2010 in Trondheim, Norway. The morning through early afternoon session explored future challenges in addressing the drivers of biodiversity loss. Three breakout sessions in the late afternoon focused on how to mainstream biodiversity and ecosystem services into policy decisions. An organ concert in the famous Nidaros Cathedral, followed by a reception hosted by the City of Trondheim at the Archbishop's Palace, rounded out the day.

 

 

An opportunity to submit additional input at the Sixth Trondheim Conference on Biodiversity.

Session 6: Reflections on future challenges for addressing drivers of biodiversity loss

Ivar Baste, Director, Secretariat of the Environment Management Group (EMG), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), offered a United Nations perspective on ecosystem services and sectoral cooperation for halting the loss of biodiversity.

Thomas Lovejoy III, Biodiversity Chair, Heinz Center for Science, Economics, and the Environment, United States, spoke about linking the major environmental challenges of biodiversity and climate change.

Christian Prip, Project Manager, United Nations University, talked about implementing the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) for the CBD.

Ladislav Miko, Director, Nature Directorate, European Commission, discussed using economics for improved decision making and the integration of biodiversity in EU policy.

Tanya Abrahamse, CEO, South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), South Africa, described the types of national institutions and forms of governance needed to meet future biodiversity challenges.

 

 

Fiu Mata’ese Elisara-La’ulu, Executive Director, Ole Si’osi’omanga Society, Samoa, discussed the importance of biodiversity in terms of climate change and disaster prevention.

Yoshihiro Natori, United Nations University (UNU) Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS), Japan, talked about the ‘Satoyama Initiative’ which seeks to advance socio-ecological production landscapes for the benefit of biodiversity and human well-being.

Søren Brandt, Herning municipality, Denmark, reviewed local efforts to halt the loss of biodiversity.

Carsten Neßhöver, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), Germany, moderated a breakout group.
