The First International Conference of Members of Parliament on the Sustainable Management of Central African Forest Ecosystems commenced proceedings Tuesday, 24 October, in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Attended by parliamentarians and issue experts from inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the conference focuses on good forest governance and poverty alleviation, with the objective of further defining the role of the Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC) and sub-regional parliaments regarding the sustainable forest management (SFM).

Matta Roland, National Branch of REPAR, welcomed delegates to the first international conference on sustainable management of Central African Forest Ecosystems.
Undescoring the socioeconomic and ecological role of forests, Bihini Won wa Musiti, IUCN, lamented threats such as illegal logging and poaching which reduce the high potential of forests.
Ibinda Clobert, Congo, outlined mechanisms for elaboration of national forest legislation.
Teodoro Nguene Obiang, Ministry of Forestry, Equatorial Guinea, emphasized that parliamentarians should participate more fully in the implementation of the COMIFAC Convergence Plan.
Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, Speaker of the National Assembly, Cameroon, declared the conference open, adding "long live sub-regional and international cooperation, and long live Cameroon!"
Roger Roteur, FAO, noted that many countries' forest policies are currently very weak and their administration overly centralized.

Jean-Yves Pirot, IUCN, noted the role that parliamentarians can play in adopting international conventions relevant to sustainable forest management (SFM)
Niels Marquardt, US Ambassador to the Republic of Cameroon, stressed that regional parliaments had an important role to play in mobilizing present and future generations to support the improved governance of natural resources within the region.
Mike Packer, Globe International, highlighted progress achived through the illegal logging dialogue initiative
Christopher Besacier, Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) noted the importance of involving the private sector in promoting sustainable development and the conservation of natural resources
Clare Brogan, Department for International Development (DFID), said that DFID will continue bilateral support for implementing partnership agreements in Central Africa, and measures to promote transparency and engagement of civil society
Mbile Norbert Nangiya, Cameroon, suggested the creation of forests conservation incentives and schemes
