Ban Ki-moon and Ministers Address Delegates

The sixteenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-16) began its High-level Segment on Wednesday, 14 May, in the General Assembly Hall, with remarks by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, followed by ministerial statements on "The Way Forward."

In the afternoon, after general statements were completed, parallel ministerial roundtables were held on "Investing in Africa to achieve Millennium Development Goals and sustainable development" and "Inter-linkages among the thematic issues, including adaptation to climate change."

The Learning Centre continued throughout the day, and side events were held at lunchtime and the evening.

The Way Forward

During the ministerial plenary chaired by CSD-16 Chair Francis Nhema (Zimbabwe), Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's address to delegates was followed by ministerial statements. The plenary began in the General Assembly Hall and was concluded in Conference Room 4.

Investing in Africa to achieve MDGs and Sustainable Development

Inter-linkages among thematic issues, including climate change adaptation

In this session, chaired by CSD-16 Vice-Chair Daniel Carmon (Israel), panelists and participants discussed food security and the present food crisis, the risks and benefits of biofuels, links between security and climate change, the stalled Doha Round trade talks, and the need for community education, capacity building, and increased research, monitoring and data collection.

Side Events

The International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development presented a lunchtime side event on bioenergy, agriculture, international trade and sustainable development.

The National Development and Reform Commission of China organized a lunchtime side event on sustainable development in China, addressing agriculture, rural development, land, drought and desertification.

WOCAN, IFAD and FAO organized an evening side event, "Network of Women Agriculture Ministers."
