Highlights for Saturday, 14 November 2009
Chair Daniel Birchmeier, Switzerland (L), accepted his nomination as Chair of the ITTC for 2010, and thanked Michael Maue, Papua New Guinea (R), for his service as Chair for 2009.

On Saturday, the forty-fifth session of the International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC) concluded its discussions in Yokohama, Japan. In the morning, Producer and Consumer Groups met in separate caucus meetings, followed by a final Council session.

Several rounds of discussions were held throughout the day and into the evening concerning the location of the next Council session, and how to pay for the additional costs associated with holding the session outside of Yokohama. While Producer members proposed using funds from the Working Capital account (WCA), Consumer members wanted the funding to come from “future payment of arrears.” The Producers rejected this as a conditionality, but later agreed to compromise text allowing for the use of the WCA “as it is expected that the payment of arrears will replenish the WCA in 2010.” Consumer and Producer groups also agreed to hold ITTC-46 in Yokohama, and ITTC-47 in Guatemala.

Following brief closing statements and the election of new officers for 2010, the Chair closed the meeting at 9 pm.
