Global Crop Diversity Day 2025 will explore innovative solutions to future-proof the global genebank system, including cryopreservation and the promotion of opportunity crops.

The event will be held at the International Potato Center (CIP) in Lima, Peru, prior to the eleventh session of the Governing Body (GB 11) of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA).

It will feature:

  • The first deposit to CIP’s new cryo genebank, the first such facility in South America;
  • Launch of Vegetables4Life, a global initiative to promote vegetable biodiversity; and
  • discussions on strengthening the global system through innovation and collaboration.

Co-hosted by the Crop Trust, the ITPGRFA Secretariat, and CIP, the event will bring together experts and decision-makers from around the world. The outcomes of discussions will feed into GB 11 deliberations, to help shape the future of crop diversity conservation and use.
