Let us work harder so the goals become a reality

On the second day of the High-level Segment of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), delegates continued discussions on two parallel tracks.

In the morning, special panels discussed, respectively, ‘Messages from the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA),’ and regional perspectives on implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The latter discussions built on outcomes of the five UN  Regional Commissions that convened to offer a platform for articulating regional priorities and perspectives to inform deliberations of major global summits that drive SDG delivery, notably the HLPF, the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4), and the Second World Summit for Social Development.

Delegates continued to hear Voluntary National Review (VNR) presentations for the rest of the day, with nine countries - Finland, the Philippines, Germany, Kazakhstan, Seychelles, Japan, The Gambia, Indonesia, and Suriname - presenting presenting their SDG progress reports. The VNR sessions were structured in a peer-review format in which representatives of countries, as well as other stakeholders, sought further clarification on the presentations.

The General Debate also continued through the afternoon, with more than 40 high-level speakers. They offered perspectives on broad themes such as:

  • multilateralism and the UN80 initiative;
  • SDG successes and challenges at national, regional and global levels;
  • strategies for scaling up innovative financing for the Global Goals; and
  • ideas for tackling entrenched challenges such as conflict and insecurity, economic and social inequality, and transnational threats such as online scams, illicit financial flows, and human trafficking.

A number of countries stressed the need to look beyond 2030, highlighting initiatives underway to align the SDGs with the Pact for the Future and other longer-term planning frameworks.
