Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF)

9–11 February 2021 | Online

UN Environment Assembly – UNEA

About

Major Groups and Stakeholders cautioned that the proposed Medium-Term Strategy for the UN Environment Programme does not sufficiently commit to protect the human right to a healthy environment and should give more attention to the interface between human and planetary health, among other proposals.

The Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF) will comprise five consultative sessions over three days during which all Major Groups interested in the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) will discuss their input to the fifth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5).

This virtual Forum is self-organized by the Major Groups and will take place from 9-11 February 2021. The GMGSF will take place immediately prior to the online sessions of the fifth session of the Open-Ended Meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to UNEP (OECPR-5) and UNEA-5.

The consultations will consider the following themes:

  • UNEP Medium-Term Strategy 2022-2025
  • UNEP Programme of Work
  • UNEP @ 50
  • Stockholm + 50
  • Main messages from Major Groups and Stakeholders to UNEA

At the conclusion of the Forum, the Major Groups and Stakeholders are expected to agree on joint positions and statements to the online sessions of OECPR-5 and UNEA-5.

The GMGSF is open to all Major Groups (accredited or non-accredited to UNEP), with Member States invited to participate as observers.

Further online consultations by Major Groups and Stakeholders are expected to be organized in the lead up to the February 2022 meeting of UNEA-5, including a full-fledged GMGSF in February 2022.

IISD, through its Earth Negotiations Bulletin Meeting Coverage, provided daily web coverage from GMGSF. A summary report of the meeting will be published on Sunday, 14 February 2021.
