Maria Cristina Cardenas, Secretariat, President Mariano Arana, and John Buccini, Director, UNEP Chemicals

Regarding the draft GPA, Jack Weinburg, IPEN (left), said that the use of “voluntary” as placed in the text could be misinterpreted to mean that activities would be voluntary for all stakeholders, regardless of their government's policy. President Arana discusses finance with delegates. The US said further clarification on the GPA was needed in light of additions made to the list of activities without negotiation and discussion to which Tanzania (right) responded that the draft GPA has been carefully discussed from region to region.

John Buccini with delegates (above left) Regarding a paragraph on activities that should be given priority in relation to chemicals that pose unreasonable risks to human health and the environment, Chair Bohn explained that this paragraph should have a footnote regarding a group of chemicals which might be prioritized for assessment, which was included in a similar paragraph in the draft OPS. India (above right) said it preferred that the footnote be deleted from both paragraphs of the draft GPA and OPS.
