A view of the opening ceremony
The seventh session of the World Urban Forum (WUF7) began on Monday, 7 April, with four parallel Assemblies that convened throughout the day and were followed by an opening ceremony.

The World Urban Youth Assembly explored how urban youth could help achieve sustainable livelihoods, improve equality, inform land use policy development and help cities to recover from conflict. The young audience frequently chanted “no decision about us without us,” a call for increased youth involvement in decision making.

Through plenary and break-out sessions, the Gender Equality Action Assembly addressed gender as a cross-cutting issue, with participants discussing, inter alia: urban design and women’s safety; tenure security and land equity; and women’s political empowerment.

The Business Assembly involved keynote remarks and an interactive session on how private sector involvement can contribute to making cities more inclusive and sustainable. Four city case studies were discussed in parallel sessions, and a plenary discussion addressed private sector participation in overcoming Medellín’s urbanization challenges.

The Children’s Assembly began with a sing-along, and then allowed children to build, paint and speak about creating safe, child-friendly cities.

In the evening, the opening ceremony commenced with a multimedia video presentation and orchestral performance, followed by addresses from high-level dignitaries. Participants heard a video address from Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the UN, and statements from Aníbal Gaviria, Mayor of Medellín; Sergio Fajardo, Governor of Antioquia; Luis Felipe Henao, Minister of Housing of Colombia; Shaun Donovan, Housing and Urban Development Secretary, US; Teima Onorio, Vice President, Kiribati; Joan Clos, UN-Habitat Executive Director; John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana; and Juan Manuel Santos, President of Colombia.
