Two concurrent dialogues were held on Wednesday morning and four special sessions were held in parallel on Wednesday afternoon, followed by a late afternoon plenary. The special sessions addressed: the Post-2015 Development Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); Urban Data for the New Urban Agenda; the World Urban Campaign; and Medellín: A City for Life.

In the dialogue on Equity in Urban Development Law, panelists stressed the need for legal reforms that, inter alia, recognize the social function of property rights and equitably distribute the benefits and costs of urbanization. Several speakers underscored the need for smart, enforceable laws that protect the poor from the risks of informality.

In the dialogue on Urban Planning and Design for Social Cohesion, one panelist cautioned against assuming that “by reorganizing space, you can solve social problems,” while most panelists agreed that planning and design could contribute to building social cohesion by fighting urban fragmentation.

In the World Urban Campaign special session, participants heard from a Children’s Assembly representative on young peoples’ dreams for cities. Partners from diverse stakeholder groups spoke about developing catalytic partnerships to realize a “new urban paradigm,” including through engaging a wider range of actors. The Campaign Chair made a call to “re-think, re-imagine and re-engineer” cities.

The special session on the Post-2015 Development Agenda and the SDGs discussed the “unique window of opportunity” for including urban sustainable development in the SDGs, with one speaker cautioning that a lack of action could lock cities into unsustainable patterns. Panelists advocated for an “integrated, integrating” approach to the SDGs.
