UN-Habitat Executive Director Joan Clos addresses the closing session of the Mayors Roundtable
In the morning, participants convened in four parallel roundtables with mayors, ministers, global parliamentarians and civil society organizations, respectively. Participants also met in parallel in the afternoon, with a private sector roundtable and three special sessions: a UN High-Level Inter-agency Meeting; a Financing the New Urban Agenda session; and a South-South and Triangular Cooperation session. Following the parallel meetings, participants gathered in plenary to hear about parallel session outcomes and continue discussions with a broader audience.

In the Ministerial Roundtable, ministers and other high-level officials shared their experiences in addressing urban inequity and reflected on actions that national governments could take to create more equitable urban systems to support both cities and development.

In the Mayors Roundtable, two panels addressed urban inequality and how mayors could engage in the post-2015 development agenda and Habitat III processes. Participants emphasized, inter alia, the need for permanent city involvement in global decision-making.

The Special Session on Financing the New Urban Agenda discussed financing challenges for sustainable urban development and proposed innovative solutions for financing a new urban agenda, including the possibility of co-financing projects with private companies with an interest in urban markets. Panelists underscored the importance of local project ownership through financial and in-kind contributions, as well as the need for projects to be embedded in a broader urban strategy.

Participants at the Special Session on South-South and Triangular Cooperation reflected on how South-South cooperation could be used to complement other types of cooperation to help face the challenges of rapid urbanization and build more equitable cities in the global South.
