CRC-10POPRC-10The second day of CRC-10 convened on Thursday, 23 October 2014. In the morning, CRC members discussed the CRC handbook of working procedures and policy guidance and the Science Fair to be held at the conferences to the parties of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions in May 2015. Members also considered the notifications of final regulatory action of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) and established a contact group to draft the Committee’s rationale for the notification from Canada. Decisions to recommend that the COP list methamidophos and fenthion (ultra low volume formulations) were adopted.

The contact group for PCNs and an informal group on the Science Fair met later in the morning before participants attended a side event on the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) during lunch.

In the afternoon, the Committee adopted decisions that both notifications of final regulatory action of short-chained chlorinated paraffins meet the Annex II criteria and that the Canadian notification of tributyltin compounds meet the criteria. Intersessional working groups were established for both chemicals in order to prepare draft decision guidance documents for consideration at CRC-11. Participants also discussed the Science Fair, including the need to underscore the importance of providing notifications of incidences at the local level and to show the benefits of the prior informed consent procedure to developing countries.

The contact group on PCNs convened in the late afternoon.
Sarah Maillefer, Switzerland, reviews the notifications of final regulatory action for polychlorinated naphthalenes.
Leonarda Christina van Leeuwen, the Netherlands, discusses polychlorinated naphthalenes.
Amal Lemsioui, Morocco, and Amal Al-Rashda, Kuwait, review draft documents.
