CRC-10POPRC-10The tenth meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC) opened on Monday, 27 October 2014. Calling POPRC “one of the most productive scientific bodies in the UN,” David Ogden, Secretariat, welcomed members on behalf of Rolph Payet, Executive Secretary of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions. Chair Estefânia Gastaldello Moreira, Brazil, welcomed participants, noting the importance of the work the Committee will undertake at this meeting.

In the morning, the Committee began its consideration of the draft risk management evaluation for pentachlorophenol (PCP), its salts and esters as well as the draft risk profile for decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE). The Committee established a contact group for PCP.

During lunch, participants attended a side event titled “Using the Inter-Organization Programme for the Sound Management of Chemicals (IOMC) Toolbox to Achieve the 2020 Goal.”

In the afternoon, delegates established a contact group for decaBDE. POPRC considered the proposal from the European Union to list dicofol in Annexes A, B and/or C of the Convention, which was first considered at POPRC-9, and established a drafting group to prepare a draft decision. POPRC also considered the process for the evaluation of the continued need for acceptable purposes and specific exemptions for perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), its salts and perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride (PFOSF) and established a contact group.

The contact groups for PCP and decaBDE convened in the evening.
