On the penultimate day of the fiftieth session of the International Tropical Timber Council, delegates heard presentations on the ITTO/CBD Collaborative Initiative for Tropical Forest Biodiversity and the ITTO Fellowship Programme. Delegates further debated increasing ITTO’s regional presence and representation, and continued the process of selecting the next ITTO Executive Director.
Before breaking for lunch, delegates held a special vote for the Executive Director, by secret ballot, in which Gerhard Dieterle (Germany) and Eduardo Mansur (Brazil) garnered the most votes.
In the afternoon, the Committee on Economics, Statistics and Markets and the Committee on Forest Industry (CEM-CFI) and the Committee on Reforestation and Forest Management (CRF) met to address remaining agenda items and adopt their Committees’ reports. The Committee on Finance and Administration (CFA) continued discussions on the revision of ITTO Staff Regulations and Rules and the Biennial Work Programme for 2015-2016.
Council resumed its session in the afternoon after caucuses meetings. It was announced that James Gasana (Switzerland) withdrew his candidacy. The Council proceeded to a second special vote, by secret ballot, for the five remaining candidates, where once again Dieterle and Mansur garnered most votes, but neither met the threshold for election. The Council will resume with the election on Saturday morning. |
