Highlights for Tuesday, 17 March 2009

On Tuesday, participants convened in plenary to hear a keynote address by the Crown Prince of Japan. They attended the Americas and European regional presentations, high-level panels on water and disasters and on finance, and sessions related to the themes “global change and risk management” and “governance and management.” The OECD launched its report on financing, and a technical experts panel on water and the financial crisis was also held. The Children’s Forum came to an end, while the Youth Forum, side events and the Water Fair and Expo continued.

Jeremias Paul, the Philippines, suggested that to attract more funding from finance ministries, water projects should emphasize their ability to deliver health, education and poverty alleviation benefits.
On national and local initiatives, Sergio Soto Priante, National Water Commission, Mexico, highlighted measures to attract private capital in Mexico’s stimulus package, including “stapled credit” to boost private investments.
