Highlights for Friday, 20 March 2009

On Friday, the 5th World Water Forum’s political process continued with a high-level Trialogue between ministers, parliamentarians and local authorities in the morning, and the opening of the Ministerial Conference in the afternoon. The regional process concluded with the Asia-Pacific regional session. Participants continued to attend thematic sessions on “managing and protecting water resources” and “education, knowledge and capacity development.” Youth delegates attended the Youth Forum closing ceremony. As part of the Forum’s cultural programme, participants attended a concert by world-renowned Turkish percussionist, Burhan Öçal, at the CRR concert hall.

Side Event
The first prize of the International ReSource Award for Sustainable Watershed Management 2009 in the amount of US$150,000 was awarded to Helvetas Afghanistan by Swiss Re. The project is on sustainable and productive management of degraded watersheds to prevent downstream flood damage in Kahmard district, Bamyan province, Afghanistan.
