The thirty-fourth meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG 34) of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer convened for its final day of deliberations on Friday, 18 July 2014, in Paris, France.
In the morning, delegates commenced with an informal discussion on hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) management, wherein parties could freely discuss their viewpoints on the legal, technical, financial and other aspects related to HFC management. A brief morning plenary was held directly after to report back on: the 2014 report of the Technology and Economics Assessment Panel (TEAP); issues related to alternatives to ozone-depleting substances; and on other matters, notably a draft decision on releases, breakdown products and opportunities for the reduction of releases.
After the morning plenary, several contact groups convened, including on monitoring of trade in hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and on the TEAP report on the 2015-2017 Multilateral Fund (MLF) replenishment. The TEAP and the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) also held meetings on the margins of the OEWG.
In the afternoon, parties reported back on the contact groups on monitoring of trade in HCFCs and on the MLF replenishment. They also heard a summarized account of the informal discussion on HFC management. The OEWG meeting report was adopted with minor changes.
Following a minute of silence for the victims of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, the meeting closed at 5:58 pm.
