Subsidiary Bodies Conclude their Work in Nairobi

On Tuesday, SBSTA, SBI and AWG reconvened to complete their work for the current session. Contact groups and informal consultations were also held throughout the day on issues such as the Adaptation Fund, adaptation programme of work, AWG issues, capacity building, financial mechanism, Joint Implementation, review of the Protocol (Article 9), Special Climate Change Fund, and technology transfer.

SBI Contact Group: Capacity Building

The contact group prepared draft decisions on capacity building under the Convention and Kyoto Protocol, which were forwarded to SBI.
SBI Contact Group: Adaptation Fund

In a contact group, Co-Chairs Macey and Gwage and SBI Chair Becker presented a draft COP/MOP decision on the Adaptation Fund finalized in a small drafting group on Monday night. They stressed the draft decision presents a delicate compromise. Following a plea from the Co-Chairs not to reopen the text for discussion, the contact group agreed to forward the draft decision.
Informal Consultations on technology transfer

In informal consultations on technology transfer, chaired by Kunihiko Shimada, Japan, and Carlos Fuller, Belize, parties agreed to extend the EGTT's mandate and membership for one year, and resume discussions on the issue at SBSTA 26.
UNFCCC senior-level roundtable discussion: International Technology Cooperation on Environmentally Sound Technologies: What makes it work?

UNFCCC held a lunchtime round-table discussion of senior-level participants from government, international financing institutions and business and industry.

Hernán Carlino, Argentina, presented to SBSTA the draft conclusions of the contact group on reducing emissions from deforestation in developing countries.

SBI Chair Thomas Becker applauded the adoption of the decision on the Adaptation Fund.

In SBI, Bernaditas de Castro-Müller, Philippines for the G-77/China, stressed the need for the financial mechanism to be fully responsive to developing countries' needs.

In the AWG, Mutsuyoshi Nishimura, Japan, expressed concern about a reference to the Protocol's market mechanisms.

AWG Vice-Chair Luiz Alberto Figueiredo Machado, Brazil, congratulated Chair Michael Zammit Cutajar on his excellent work.

AWG Chair Michael Zammit Cutajar gaveled the AWG 2 plenary to a close on Tuesday evening.
UN Secretary-General's Arrival

Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived by jet.

Secretary-General Annan greeted UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner, while UNON Director-General Anna Tibaijuka looked on.

Reuters-IUCN Environmental Media Awards

Reuters Foundation and the World Conservation Union (IUCN) held a ceremony to recognize the regional winners of the Reuters-IUCN Environmental Media Awards and announce the global winner. The awards were presented by Australian Senator Christine Milne, flanked by Alice Kaudia, Director of IUCN's East Africa Regional Office, and Alister Doyle, Reuters Environment Correspondent.

Sara Philips won in the North America, Oceania and Caribbean region for an article on water management in Australia.

Dalia abdel-Salam won in the Francophone Africa region for an article on destruction of coral reefs in the Red Sea by a hotel.

Richard Stone won in the Asia region for an article on a $62 billion water-supply plan in China.

Anju Sundaram won in the English-speaking Africa and Middle East region for an article on Congo's Pygmies selling their sacred forests.

John Bohannon won in the Europe region for an article on freshwater issues in the Gaza strip.

Marina Walker won in the Latin America region, and also won the global prize, for an article on children suffering from lead contamination in Peru.
