adaptation and the adverse impacts of response measures.

Jan-Erik Enestam, Finland for the EU, highlighted the dangers of
delaying action, stressing that it is not seeking to impose binding
targets on developing countries but to explore a range of options.

Fatemeh Vaez Javadi, Vice President and Head, Department of the Environment,
Islamic Republic of Iran, asked the COP to consider the role of nuclear energy.

Rona Ambrose, Minister of the Environment, Canada, reaffirmed its
commitment to the Protocol and called for a global solution.

Jiang Weixin, Minister, Vice-Chairman, National Development and Reform
Commission, urged Annex I countries to agree on new emission reduction
targets.

Connie Hedegaard, Minister for the Environment and Nordic Cooperation,

Sigmar Gabriel, Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation
and Nuclear Safety, Germany hoped the EU would reduce emissions by 30%
by 2020 compared to 1990 levels, and said it would be willing to cut its
own emissions by 40% by that time.

Unconventionally, Belgium gave the floor to Margaretha Guidone, a
Belgian housewife who made an impassioned plea "to fight together
against the impacts of climate change for the next generation."

UNEP/UNDP Press Event
|
Olav Kjørven, Director of UNDP's Energy and Environment Group,
and Achim Steiner, Executive Director of UNEP, announced a partnership
to assist Africa with adaptation to climate change and better access
to the Clean Development Mechanism. UNFCCC Executive Secretary Yvo de
Boer welcomed the partnership, and Cristina Narbona, Minister of
Environment, Spain, pledged 2 million Euros in funding to support the
partnership.
