Highlights and images for 15 February 2022

On Tuesday, delegates attending the 12th session of Working Group II (WGII-12) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) continued their consideration of the Summary for Policymakers (SPM) of the WGII contribution to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6). Three plenary sessions took place during the day, addressing:

the introductory section of the SPM and a diagram within that section intended to set the stage for the reader;
climate-resilient development; and
future adaptation options and their feasibility.

Throughout the day, delegates also gathered in contact groups focusing on the subsection on observed impacts from climate change, which had been considered in plenary discussions on Monday.

Discussions focused on kickstarting the implementation of the new BBNJ treaty, especially by identifying marine protected areas. Many also underscored ocean-climate linkages and highlighted the importance of global cooperation on ocean science.

UN Science-Policy-Business Forum on the Environment Special Sessions at UNEA-6

The United Nations Science-Policy-Business Forum on the Environment (UN-SPBF) convened a day-long Special Session at UNEA-6. Building on recent UN-SPBF regional and thematic processes and outcomes of expert groups, and with a focus on “solution-driven thought-leadership,” the day was organized around moderated, interactive debates and deep-dive segments introducing perspectives and contributions from multiple sectors and stakeholders.

UNEA-6 and OECPR-6

Under the theme “Effective, inclusive and sustainable multilateral actions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution,” delegates adopted 15 resolutions, two decisions, and a Ministerial Declaration, covering topics including the highly hazardous pesticides, sustainable lifestyles, sand and dust storms, and environmental recovery in areas affected by armed conflict.
