The
World Summit on Sustainable Development
Bali,
Indonesia | 25 May - 7 June 2002Fourth Preparatory Committee (WSSD PrepCom IV)
Saturday, 8 June |

Ministerial
level negotiations continued throughout the day behind closed doors
where sources say discussions on finance are at a standstill. A
morning meeting of the Vienna Group was cancelled as the G-77/China
meeting continued throughout the morning. Delegates met in High-Level
Ministerial segment in the morning and afternoon sessions for an
interactive dialogue on the Political Declaration. |

In the afternoon, delegates crowded around the television to watch Sweden and Nigeria World Cup game and waited for the reconvening of the Vienna Group. Many believe negotiations will continue into Saturday morning. (left) | |||||||||||||||||

Alan Nymark, Deputy Environment Minister, Canada (far left) with Japan During the final Plenary, Canada said that a paragraph on health did not adequately reflect the linkage between human rights and health as reflected in other UN conferences. He requested that language be added to a paragraph on strengthening health care systems regarding conformity with all human rights and fundamental freedoms. Sweden, the EU and Switzerland supported Canada. Chair Salim ruled that there would be no negotiations in the Plenary and that the text would be transmitted as is to Johannesburg. Canada asked that it be reflected in the report of the meeting that there is a disagreement over the designation of this paragraph as agreed. |

Venezuelan
Environment Minister Ana Elisa Osorio said
in a press conference that the G-77/China, Norway, Mexico and New
Zealand had agreed to the Chair's compromise text on means of implementation,
but that others had not.
