Highlights for Friday, 8 February 2002


Following the adoption of the meeting's recommendations (UNEP/CBD/WG8J/2/L.2-7) and the report of the meeting (UNEP/CBD/WG8J/2/L.1), several delegates delivered closing statements.
Canada announced the Equator Initiative, sponsored by UNDP in partnership with the Canadian Government and others, which will recognize rural and indigenous communities in tropical countries that have demonstrated sustainable livelihoods using biological resources. He said that five $30,000 awards would be presented at the WSSD, and that nominations were currently being accepted. The Netherlands invited all Parties and participants of the IIFB to the upcoming COP-6 meeting in The Hague.

Closing Plenary:


Co-Chair of Sub-Working Group I, John Herity, introducing the recommendations proposed by sub-working group I regarding the outline of the composite report on status and trends and the draft guidelines on impact assessment. 

Co-Chair of Sub-Working Group II, Linus Thomas (Grenada) introduces  recommendations on participatory mechanisms and on the assessment of existing intellectual property rights instruments.

 

Indigenous Co-Chairs Earl Stevenson (Peguis First Nation) and Lucy  Mulenkei (African Indigenous Women Organization) agree with the reports of their fellow Co-Chairs and thank participating delegates for their efficient cooperation.



Delegates discussing the implications of a reference to WIPO's work on sui generis systems for the protection of traditional knowledge decided to leave the reference in the text that will go before COP6.



Togo, on behalf of the African Group, said that humanity had taken a step forward to protect nature, by protecting traditional knowledge and asked the Secretariat to support all local and indigenous communities.


Fiji, on behalf of the Pacific Islands, appreciated the opportunity to address difficulties developing countries had with the implementation of the Convention and asked for ongoing support.



Ecuador, on behalf of GRULAC, stressed the need for inter-cultural dialogue to bring local communities and governments closer.



Hamdallah Zedan, Executive Secretary of the CBD, said the outcome of the meeting represented a positive step in the implementation of Article 8(j) and the Convention.



Chair Elaine Fisher on behalf of the President of the Bureau, thanked everybody involved in the organization and substantive undertakings of the Working Group and reminded everybody of the task ahead at COP6.


An indigenous knowledge holder closed the meeting by sharing his vision that all nations and indigenous peoples had to work together for the protection of their home, the Earth. Chair Fisher then gaveled the meeting to a close at 2.20 p.m.
